About the Book

The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank

Review by Tea Henson

The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank is a non-fiction account of a Jewish teenage girl's life while hiding from the Nazis during the Holocaust. The diary, set against the backdrop of World War II, offers a glimpse into Anne's everyday life, thoughts, and feelings during her two years in hiding. Through her writing, readers can follow Anne's development from a carefree young girl to a mature teenager. Her entries highlight the challenges she faced—such as conflicts with her family, struggles with her identity, and the constant fear of being discovered. Despite the dread and terror of confinement, Anne's diary also reflects her optimism and faith in human goodness.

I chose this book because it was the first to give me insight into the Holocaust and what life was like during that time for a Jewish person. Anne Frank was not only a girl but also a child, and when I first read the book at a young age, it made me realize how fortunate I was to have the life I had. Anne Frank didn't just describe what she experienced; she also expressed how she felt, and that deeply resonated with me. I felt great sympathy for her, which made me want to keep reading. The key takeaway from this book was to never take anything for granted. Understanding what Anne went through and recognizing her pain helped me appreciate just how lucky I am to live the life I have.
